Ding Darling National
Wildlife Refuge

What Does Mere Man Know
about the Perils of Non-Stop Flying?

"Ding" recognized that migratory birds needed resting places along the nation's flyways in order to survive. During his tenure as Chief of the U.S. Biological Survey, predecessor to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, he laid the practical foundation for building a coherent system of National Wildlife Refuges. Today that system incorporates over 500 National Wildlife Refuges, many of which lie along major migratory routes.
